Mayor Sadiq Khan's attempt to expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to outer London boroughs is being hampered on several fronts.

A Sky News investigation has found fraudsters have been selling counterfeit ULEZ exemption certificates on social media.

And cameras are being damaged by vandals opposed to the expansion.

The Ultra Low Emission Zone - more commonly known as ULEZ - aims to improve air quality in London by charging heavy polluting smaller vehicles to drive on its roads.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has expanded the area, citing more Londoners dying prematurely of lung conditions - and at risk of developing dementia.

He's been met with fierce opposition, however. A group of five Conservative-led councils launched a High Court challenge against the plans. Their appeal was unsuccessful, but there remains a debate over how impactful the changes will be.

Clean air zones aim to reduce air pollution by charging drivers of the most polluting vehicles - but with the public already feeling the financial pinch during a cost of living crisis, many feel ULEZ is just a money making scheme.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has been given the green light to go ahead with the expansion across the capital at the end of August and many commuters are outraged about digging deeper into their pockets to get from A to B.
When the zone expands, around 700,000 cars in London will not be compliant, according to the RAC.

But the aim of ULEZ is cleaner air and better health for all - so what should take priority?

The expansion of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has sparked a fierce backlash from motorists who are now facing daily charges of ยฃ12.50 if their vehicles do not comply. This has led to an increase in attacks on ULEZ cameras and calls by senior Tories to slash the scheme in favour of hard-pressed motorists. The scale of this criminality is significant, with hundreds of cameras being damaged or stolen across the city.

To discuss how members of the public are fighting back to scrap ULEZ, in this week's Crime Suspect former Met Detective Peter Bleksley is joined by 'Mr. ULEZ' Noel Willcox, anti-ULEZ campaigner Paul The Orange Dinosaur and former Met Superintendent Shabnam Chaudri.

The ULEZ scheme, which aims to reduce pollution levels in the city, has raised concerns among motorists who feel it is simply a cash grab. Many argue that the signage is unclear and does not provide adequate information about the charges. Scaffolding business owner Noel Willcox, who was hit with fines totalling ยฃ11,500, successfully challenged the fines in court, arguing that the signs were not lawful. Despite the court ruling in his favour, Transport for London (TFL) continued to pursue him for the debts.

The ULEZ scheme is expected to generate around ยฃ174 million per year for TFL. While the funds are intended to be used for improving transport systems and reducing pollution levels, critics argue that the money could be better spent on other priorities, such as increasing police resources to tackle crime. Protests and campaigns against the ULEZ scheme are growing in numbers, with campaigners like Paul the Orange Dinosaur gaining attention and inspiring others to join the fight.

The expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (Ulez) across London can go ahead after the UKโ€™s High Court ruled it lawful.

The plans had been challenged by opponents to the Mayor of London's bid to charge older, more polluting vehicles a fee to drive through the zone.

The BBCโ€™s Ros Atkins takes a look at the controversial expansion which will see the zone cover the vast majority of Greater London.
