Thousands of Palestinians are fleeing northern Gaza as Israel's military pushed deeper into dense urban neighborhoods in its battle with Hamas militants. Officials in the besieged enclave said the Palestinian death toll has surpassed 11,000 people.
The search for safety in Gaza is growing more desperate as combat intensifies. Residents who escaped to the south and Palestinian health officials reported strikes in and around Gaza City’s main hospital overnight. Israel said at least one was the result of a misfired Palestinian rocket.
The World Health Organization said Friday that 20 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are no longer functioning, including a pediatric hospital that stopped operations after a reported Israeli strike in the area.
“If there is a hell on earth today, its name is northern Gaza,” the U.N. humanitarian agency spokesperson, Jens Laerke, told reporters in Geneva.

Since Israel began its bombardment of Gaza, 9 countries have withdrawn their ambassadors or severed ties.
They've called for an immediate ceasefire and for humanitarian aid to enter the strip unhindered.
NATO member Turkey is among those that pulled their ambassador out.
So did Israel's neighbour, Jordan, that said Israel is committing "war crimes".
The latest to join the list are South Africa and Chad.
Bolivia was the first to sever ties entirely with Israel - saying its decision was a "condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip”.

Israeli tanks have approached the edge of Gaza City according to witnesses amid what the military has described as an expansion in operations.

Tanks entered the Zaytun district on the southern fringes of Gaza City, cutting a key road from the north to the south of the territory, witnesses told AFP.
“They have cut the Salahedin Road and are firing at any vehicle that tries to go along it,” said one resident who did not give his name.
It comes as the Israeli army said that its forces killed dozens of militants overnight on Sunday as it pressed ahead with its military response to the October 7 Hamas attacks.
The army said “troops killed dozens of terrorists who barricaded themselves in buildings and tunnels and attempted to attack the troops”, and that a fighter jet had targeted a building “with over 20 Hamas terrorist operatives inside”.

On October 7, Hamas, a militant group based in the Gaza Strip, launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing over 1,400 Israelis and kidnapping over 200. In retaliation, Israeli airstrikes have killed, as of this video, over 6,400 Palestinians in Gaza, where Palestinians have lived for decades under an occupation and blockade.
Since 1967, Israel has imposed tight restrictions on travel and essential goods such as food, fuel, medicine, and water in its occupied territories. In 2007, those restrictions became even tighter in Gaza after Hamas seized power there. Since then, it has been nearly impossible for Palestinians to leave Gaza or to access an adequate supply of essential goods.
Today, the Gaza Strip, with a population of over 2 million Palestinians, is a victim of what many call “collective punishment” as Israel bombards its population, shuts off access to internet, power, food, water, and medicine, forces them to leave their homes, and prepares for a ground invasion.

Video released on Wednesday (November 8) by Hamas military's arm, Al-Qassam Brigades, showed what they said was close fighting with the Israeli forces on the streets of Gaza.
Reuters was able to verify the location of the first part of the video with satellite images matching the coastline, roads, buildings, and pier distribution in the northwestern neighborhood of Atatra in Beit Lahiya, Gaza Strip. Reuters was not able to verify other elements of the video.
Israeli forces entered Gaza on Oct. 27 after days of heavy bombardment in response to a surprise Hamas attack through the border fence on Oct. 7, which Israel says killed 1,400 people.
Over the past 12 days, thousands of Israeli troops have encircled Gaza City, effectively cutting the densely populated coastal enclave into two, as they look to hunt down and eliminate Hamas fighters.
According to latest figures released on Wednesday, 31 Israeli soldiers have been killed during the Gaza ground offensive, and more than 260 injured. Palestinian officials say 10,569 people have been killed by Israeli forces since Oct. 7, 40% of them children.

Another 200,000 people have fled northern Gaza since Nov. 5, the U.N. humanitarian office said Tuesday, as Israeli ground forces battle Palestinian militants around hospitals where patients, newborns and medics are stranded with no electricity and dwindling supplies.
The humanitarian office, known as OCHA, says only one hospital in the north is capable of receiving patients. All the others are no longer able to function and mostly serve as shelters from the fighting, including Gaza’s largest, Shifa, which is surrounded by Israeli troops and where 36 babies are at risk of dying because there is no power for incubators.
The war, now in its sixth week, was triggered by Hamas’ surprise attack into Israel, in which militants massacred hundreds of civilians and dragged some 240 hostages back to Gaza. Israel launched heavy airstrikes for nearly three weeks before sending troops and tanks into the north. The war has killed thousands of Palestinian civilians and wreaked widespread destruction on the impoverished enclave.
A major pro-Israel rally is expected in Washington DC Tuesday, as people come from across the country and the world to show their support amid the war with Hamas.

Im Keller einer Kinderklinik in der Stadt Gaza haben israelische Soldaten eigenen Angaben zufolge zahlreiche Waffen palästinensischer Extremisten gefunden. Es gebe auch Anzeichen dafür, dass im Keller des Rantisi-Krankenhauses Geiseln festgehalten worden sein könnten, sagte Militärsprecher Daniel Hagari. In einem am Montagabend auf der Plattform X, vormals Twitter, veröffentlichten Video zeigt er Sturmgewehre, Handgranaten, Sprengstoffwesten und Waffen zur Panzerabwehr. «Das ist Ausrüstung für schwere Kämpfe», sagt Hagari weiter. Hamas-Führer Chalil al-Haja sagte dem Sender Al-Dschasira, Israel werfe mit Falschbehauptungen um sich.
Israels Außenminister: Druck wird in zwei bis drei Wochen steigen
Israels Regierung stellt sich nach Worten des Außenministers Eli Cohen darauf ein, dass binnen zwei bis drei Wochen der internationale Druck auf ihr Land wegen des Gaza-Kriegs deutlich steigen wird. Politischer Druck aus dem Ausland sei zwar schon jetzt wahrzunehmen, aber noch nicht sehr stark - das ändere sich zunehmend. «In den Gesprächen, die ich führe, liegt der Fokus auf dem Thema der humanitären Hilfsleistungen», so Cohen. Die Solidarität und Erschütterung nach dem Massaker der Hamas an israelischen Zivilisten am 7. Oktober gingen dagegen zurück. Israel werde in jedem Fall weiterkämpfen, «bis wir die Hamas zerstört und die Geiseln zurückgebracht haben», schrieb er auf X.
Israels Militär: Haben Brutkästen für Schifa-Klinik angeboten
Angesichts der dramatischen Lage im Schifa-Krankenhaus im Gazastreifen haben die israelischen Streitkräfte eigenen Angaben zufolge die Lieferung von Brutkästen für Frühchen angeboten. «Wir haben den Gesundheitsbehörden in Gaza das formelle Angebot unterbreitet, Brutkästen in den Gazastreifen zu bringen, um der Kinderklinik im Schifa-Krankenhaus zu helfen», sagte eine Sprecherin der für Kontakte mit den Palästinensern zuständigen israelischen Behörde Cogat. «Wir sind im Krieg mit der Hamas und nicht mit der Bevölkerung von Gaza.» Auf Fotos war zu sehen, wie eine israelische Soldatin Brutkästen in einen Transporter bringt.
UN-Hilfswerk fürchtet Totalausfall der Kommunikation im Gazastreifen
Das UN-Hilfswerk für Palästinensische Flüchtlinge im Nahen Osten (UNRWA) fürchtet unterdessen einen Totalausfall der Telekommunikation im Gazastreifen. Der Treibstoff der Telekomunternehmen reiche noch bis Donnerstag, um Strom für die Datenzentren und den Betrieb von Servern zu produzieren, hieß es. Angesichts zahlreicher Dienstunterbrechungen sei es jetzt schon zunehmend schwierig, Menschen zu erreichen und akkurate Informationen über die Lage vor Ort zusammenzutragen.
Biden ruft zu besserem Schutz von Krankenhäusern in Gaza auf
US-Präsident Joe Biden rief Israel dazu auf, Krankenhäuser im Gazastreifen mehr als bisher vom Kampfgeschehen zu verschonen. Er hoffe und erwarte, dass es rund um Kliniken weniger starke Kampfhandlungen gebe, sagte Biden laut US-Medien im Weißen Haus. Er äußerte sich darüber hinaus hoffnungsvoll zu Gesprächen über die mögliche Freilassung von Geiseln. Bidens Nationaler Sicherheitsberater Jake Sullivan forderte, dass es neben besserem Schutz der Krankenhäuser auch ungefährliche Evakuierungswege für dort eingeschlossene Menschen geben müsse.
