Suspect shoots and wounds artist after altercation at rally for New Mexico statue
Authorities in New Mexico are investigating a shooting captured on video that left one person shot during a rally for a Don Juan de Oñate statue on Thursday.
The video posted on Instagram shows a scuffle after a group of men approach the suspect who was wearing a "MAGA" hat and later jumps a small retaining wall to escape before pulling out a gun, CNN says.
It’s unclear what led to the altercation that ended in the shooting, according to CNN.
During a press conference Thursday, Rio Arriba County Sheriff Billy Merrifield said the suspect was taken into custody. He's been identified as 23-year-old Ryan Martinez of New Mexico.
The shooting victim is reportedly receiving medical care but right now, their condition is unknown, CNN says.
The statue was taken down in 2020. a rededication was scheduled to take place Thursday.
