London's ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) is facing a legal battle over its expansion plans, which would extend to most parts of Greater London by the end of August. The scheme, introduced in 2019, charges a fee of £12.50 per day for vehicles that do not meet emissions standards.
The expansion has been challenged by five local Conservative-run councils, who have brought the mayor's office to court for a judicial review. Health campaigners and environmental pressure groups support the expansion, citing the need to tackle air pollution.

Sadiq Khan is reportedly issuing more than £700,000 worth of ULEZ fines daily, including for cars considered pollution-compliant.
The latest official figures show 3,944 fines were issued daily for breaching emissions rules in June.
Conservative MP Gareth Bacon hits out at Sadiq Khan for burdening people with ULEZ charge during the cost of living crisis.
“Ninety per cent of cameras in my local borough have been dismantled or destroyed, and that speaks volumes” of people’s frustration, he says.

Vandals attacking ULEZ cameras may have run up a bill of nearly £10m in the sixth months since the scheme has been launched.
Figures show that from April to October, police recorded 220 cameras being stolen and 767 damaged.
Each camera is believed to be worth £10,000, meaning a total close to £10m if all have been replaced.

The expansion of Sadiq Khan’s Ultra Low Emission Zone to cover all of Greater London has many of its newest members furious with the new ULEZ charge.
Since the beginning of September anyone driving a non-compliant vehicle in the new ULEZ zones must pay £12.50-per-day.
In South London's outer boroughs of Bexley and Bromley many of the cameras which have been erected to catch people driving non compliant vehicles have been damaged and in some cases cut down and removed.
The borough now has mobile ULEZ camera vans which set up in different places around the charging zone.
But a group of Londoners are making it difficult for TFL to us these vans to police their new policy.
And they've enlisted the help of a creature not seen in Britain for 110 million years...

A Just Stop Oil protester was thrown to the ground during a physical confrontation in London with a furious member of the public.
Around 18 environmental activists were marching in Mansell Street, near the Tower of London, on Friday morning when they became involved in an altercation with a man, reported to be a motorist.
Video captured from a nearby building shows the man pushing several activists, one of whom fell to the ground, in an attempt to remove them from a bus lane where demonstrators were marching slowly.

Police ordered a furious driver not to "assault" Just Stop Oil protesters as he dragged them off the road.
Around one hundred activists returned to five central London roads for more "slow marches" on Tuesday morning, their second road-blocking stunt in as many days, demanding that ministers scrap all new oil and gas licences.
But they were met with visible anger from some motorists, who ripped banners from them, loudly tooted horns, hurled expletives and attempted to push them off the road.
The Metropolitan Police again simply strolled alongside the group without intervening, after an attempt by the Home Secretary Suella Braverman to bring a crackdown was defeated in the House of Lords.
One driver stuck in the gridlock yelled at the group: "You're blocking an electric car!"
In another testy exchange, a driver ripped away the group's infamous orange banners while shouting "just go - people have got to go to work" and "f*** off, every single one of you". He then urged a lorry driver stuck at the front of the traffic jam to "just move your vehicle".

The eco-mob said that 100 of its members took part in a march on Hendon Way, north London, which is one of the capital's busiest roads, in what is the third week of its campaign against motorists. Metropolitan Police officers arrived on the scene 'immediately' and have already made 'multiple arrests'. The force said: 'There is significant congestion in the area. People stuck in this could be trying to get to work, appointments or school.' Footage from the scene shows one angry member of the public confronting the group, sarcastically telling activists 'this is definitely going to work' and pointing out that 'all your clothes are made out of oil'. The man then calls the group a 'joke' for 'wasting everybody's time and petrol ' as several motorists can be heard blaring their horns in frustration over the disruption caused by the eco-zealots.

After their home was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike, the Kullab family was forced to move into shelters with other displaced Palestinians, but the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions drew them out and back to their destroyed home.
Now the family lives among the rubble that remains of their residential building in Khan Yunis, "the lesser of two evils," according to Ramzi Kullab.
The family now uses a small grill to bake bread on the stairwell and a small tank filled with water for bathing and drinking.
Plus, in a makeshift tent city in the southern Gaza Strip teeming with thousands of displaced people, three cats called Simsim, Brownie and Liza are giving rare moments of joy to children who have lost any semblance of normality in their lives. The cats belong to the Harb family, who fled their home in a residential tower in the relatively affluent area of al-Zahra in central Gaza to escape from Israeli air strikes that flattened the building and much of their old neighbourhood.
Palestinian officials said 10,569 people had been killed as of Wednesday, 40 per cent of them children. Israel says 33 of its soldiers have been killed.

Footage shows an Israeli soldier about to throw a stun grenade into a crowd, before receiving orders to stop.
VICE News correspondent Hind Hassan (@hanood7sn) began filming this clip right after a stun grenade was reportedly used against medics and journalists.
The incident took place amid growing chaos in Jerusalem, as Israeli police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades outside the Al Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
Tensions have escalated ahead of a now-delayed court ruling on whether authorities are allowed to evict dozens of Palestinians from their homes in occupied East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

While speaking to auto workers in Belvidere, Illinois, US President Joe Biden was interrupted by a pro-Palestine protester calling for a ceasefire.
The protester was met by boos by the crowd, but Biden remained calm, asking security to "let her go."

Israel is testing out AI remote-control guns on Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank. First pictured at a military checkpoint in the city of Hebron, the same technology has recently been installed by the Israeli occupation at a military base overlooking the Aida Refugee Camp in the city of Bethlehem. The gun is pointed towards a Main Street in the camp where children often play.
Some ultra-Orthodox Jews were caught on camera spitting towards Christian pilgrims leaving the Church of the Flagellation in the Old City of Jerusalem last Monday.
